CALCIUM–RICH FOODS ENHANCE WEIGHT LOSS
03/28/2005 - Consuming more dairy products may make it easier to lose extra pounds and burn fat without drastically cutting back on calories. Although calories do still matter, "If you compare a dairy-rich versus a dairy-poor diet you can nearly double the rate of weight and fat loss with the same level of calorie restriction," says researcher Michael Zemel, Ph.D., professor of nutrition and medicine at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
University of Tennessee researchers have published three studies demonstrating that eating foods rich in calcium apparently causes the body to boost its use of energy. In other words, more calories are burned rather than being stored as body fat.
This study suggests that by including three to four servings of dairy in your diet, you can make a modest calorie reduction as effective as a more dramatic reduction. (Note that the study concluded that consuming dairy was more effective than obtaining calcium through supplementation.) However, the author cautions that this shouldn't be viewed as "license to indulge in dairy products in hopes of spurring weight loss. The bottom line of successful weight loss is still burning more calories than you take in."
Increasing dairy intake without consuming excess calories and fat can be easy if you follow the advice in EAT WELL The YoChee Way. By simply draining nonfat yogurt to create YoChee – or what some people call yogurt cheese – you create a mild-flavored, fat-free, calcium- and protein-rich food that can stand in for high-calorie foods like cream cheese, sour cream, heavy cream or mayonnaise, without sacrificing the sensual pleasures of fatty foods. This ability to simultaneously reduce calories and fat and increase calcium is a one-step approach to achieving Zemel’s study goals.
EAT WELL The YoChee Way features more than 275 tasty ways to enjoy YoChee, ranging from breakfast, appetizers, spreads, dips, and soups to entrees, pasta dishes, vegetable sides, sandwiches, pizzas, salads, sauces, baked goods, desserts, and toppings.
